Review of Skype 2.0.0.79 (Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows PocketPC, Macintosh OS X, SuSE 9, Fedora Core 3, Mandriva 10.1x, Xandros, MEPIS, Ubuntu)

By IM Watch

We’ve always been a fan of Skype. So when 2.0 came out, we had to get it. Here’s what we found:

Voice: Terrific. After all, what can you expect from a VOIP program?
Video: Subpar. Skype only has 15 fps, and only Windows XP users can use the video option.
File Transfer: Not tested.
Smileys: Subpar. It has animated smileys, but a small amount.
Games: None.
Interface: Subpar. The interface was only OK.
Bottom Line: Skype just got better with support for most webcams. You can also get several other features, such as calling phones, receiving phones calls, and getting voicemail. You can even buy Skype cell phones! Skype can also be downloaded to a Pocket PC. However, its interface is pretty cluttered.

Skype 2.0.0.79 For Windows
Skype 1.4.0.35 For Macintosh OS X
Skype 1.2.0.18 For SuSE 9, Fedora Core 3, Mandriva 10.1x, Xandros, MEPIS, Ubuntu
Skype For 2.0.0.39 PocketPC

[...] Voice: None. OK, this is bad. Right now, vv (Voice and Video) isn’t implemented into Gaim. There is good news for Linux users however, because two guys put together Gaim VV (No Longer Supported). You can also get Phone Gaim (but it never worked for me). Video: None. OK, this is bad. Right now, vv (Voice and Video) isn’t implemented into Gaim. There is good news for Linux users however, because two guys put together Gaim VV (No Longer Supported). File Transfer: Not tested. Smileys: Great! It uses the smileys for each protocol (so you use Yahoo! smileys when talking to Y! users). Games: None. Bottom Line: How could you not like the new one? Because of no Skype support. Also because of the lack of VV. But that will change in 2.5. Meanwhile, why not get Skype? [...]

[...] Voice: Not tested. Why? IT DOESNT WORK! I tried it, even got a Sipphone account, but it STILL DIDNT WORK! [For other features, go to the Gaim page] Bottom Line: Maybe you’ll get it. But for me, I’ll stick to Skype. PhoneGaim 0.79.5 For Windows XP Phone Gaim ? For Linspire [...]

Of course, the only implementation to support most of those new features is the Windows one.

  4. IM Watch » Blog Archive » Review of Unyte 1.0.10.4 Says:

[...] Some people just can’t live without NetMeeting. But, ever tried Unyte? Unyte is a program that lets someone else see exactly what you’re doing. It’s a plugin for Skype.. The other person doesn’t even need Skype! It takes you to a Java page, which lets you see a virtual page of whatever you’re working on, Word docs, Konfabulator Widgets, ect. [...]

well, why stick with skype, this is the most buggy software out there, everybody is looking around for a replacement for skype, on linux crashing, horrible sound disturbins, on windows crashing and horrbile breakups,
there is actually nothing left anymore, voip is getting worse unstead better.
the only voip softphone who really works is “ooVoo”
it is the best and clear sound and video, vdeomails free, free phone calls to pstn in the usa and canada, other country`s comming soon.
the only thing is it is not ready for linux, but they work on a linux version now for two weeks something like this.
    really best voip-video softphone.
    it is a must have.
